Individual Project: Center or Home Care Safety Check and Playground Safety Inspection Report
Due by 11:59 PM on November 3
Children must have a safe and healthy environment in which they can learn. As a result, early childhood education staff spend the majority of their time ensuring that the indoor and outdoor learning environments of the home and center are safe for the children. In this assignment, you will have the opportunity to see first-hand what that entails. Recommendation: This assignment is best when conducted in a licensed center or home. IF POSSIBLE, locate a licensed center or an in home care licensed facility and make your appointment now so that you have time to conduct your safety checklist and playground inspection, and complete your report by the November 3 due date. The Cuyamaca Child Development Center is a good place to do this inspection at or do a search in your area. Remember when you are doing this you are a representative of this collage and I expect you to leave a good impression on the site you visit.
Rationale: The rationale for this assignment is to help you identify health, safety, and environmental risks in early care and education programs (MJC CLO1).
InstructionsOverview: Perform an analysis of the health, safety, and environmental risks of a center or home and a playground using official evaluation documents and then submit a report on the findings.
GRADING TIP: Check the Resources below for an example of an excellent Safety Check and Playground Safety Inspection Report that a previous student did. Method: Step 1: Locate, ask permission from, and make an appointment with a licensed home or center to conduct your safety check and playground safety report card. You may need to provide the home operator or center director with a copy of the Informed Consent Form. Step 2: Perform the safety check by utilizing the CCHP Health and Safety Checklist for Early Care and Education Programs and evaluate a playground by using the America’s Playgrounds Safety Report Card.
If you are doing the safety check at a school or facility, avoid asking teachers questions while they are busy teaching. Your role should be to silently observe what you can physically see and hear. Plan to be in the school or facility for approximately 60-90 minutes. Remember to act and dress professionally because you represent the student body of GCCCD while you are doing the safety check and playground inspection. Depending upon the age of the children in the home or center, you may or may not be required to fill out all sections of the CCHP-Health-and-Safety-Checklist since some sections only apply to infants and some only apply to preschool children. Step 3: Download and use the 16-page CCHP Health and Safety Checklist and download and the two-page Americas Playgrounds Safety Check Report Card.pdf. (Contact me if you are unable to print the checklist or the report card). You will record your scores on the CCHP checklist and the playground report card, and then utilize these to discuss your findings. AVOID sharing the results of your checklist or the playground report card with the licensed home or center or offering the licensed home or center any advice. This activity is only for you to collect information to help you identify health, safety, and environmental risks in early care and education programs. Step 4: Download and use the TEMPLATE Safety Checklist and Playground Report Card. You will answer the questions in the template to report your findings. Step 5: Use your completed safety checklist and the playground report card and the template to create a PowerPoint presentation that:
