Note: All final project prep assignments are individual assignments. This assignment should not be written in an essay format. Whole sentences and paragraphs are required where word counts are given, but you may arrange your written response with headers and do not need to make formal transitions between the responses to each task.
After studying the materials provided for the case you chose and completing your own research as necessary, thoroughly answer the following questions.
Objective: The goal of this assignment is to practice articulating the outcomes of the implementation of the system in your case study. We do this so that we can see the effects of this technology on different groups of people.
Task 1: What was the goal of the system and the projected outcome? (100 words) Identify 5 of the desired and undesired outcomes of the system (bulleted list acceptable).
Task 2: Analyze the role of people, and social processes in the system. How have classification systems (such as conceptions of race, class, gender, and/or disability) shaped the development of the system? What did the people who designed and built the system want it to do? Note that different people could have multiple desired outcomes. What were the unintended consequences and realities of the system that differed from the stated purpose of the system? (200-300 words)
Task 3: Analyze differential effects of the system on different people. What benefits were experienced by which people? What harms were experienced by which people? Are there arguments made by some people that the system needs to change? If so, what are those arguments? (200-300 words)
Task 4: Finally, articulate sociotechnical recommendations you believe could help folks affected by this system. Propose at minimum 2 solutions that could reduce, or minimize the harm caused by the system. Only 1 may be technical. The other may be community, social, or legal. (200 – 300 words)
